Game Developer Survey Question Three: What are your failures?

Facing up to our failures are often the hardest thing to do. Sometimes we try the best that we can, but we still don’t succeed. Reflecting on these failures can help us to achieve more and do better in the future. That’s why the third question focused on failures:

Question 3: What are some of the things that you tried and failed at?

  • Unclear understanding of how to price games on release.
  • Some respondents spoke of branding issues. They felt that they weren’t sure what to name the game in order to communicate to the customer what the game was or if it was what they were looking for.
  • Failed to make regular blog posts to update users due to fatigue.
  • Published underpolished and underdeveloped game with no marketing.
  • Game lacked strong value incentive for potential customers.
  • Much time spent on the idea stage (some as long as 4 years) and reinventing the wheel of an existing game engine.
  • Failed fundraiser and Kickstarter campaign.
  • Shift from 2D to 3D games was too daunting.
  • Games don’t produce enough income to support a team. Felt that with a PR person to rewrite statements and game descriptions, game would do better.
  • Failure to maintain industry contacts and relationships.
